Our next blog series summarizes a unique fable of a college football coach as he receives guidance from mysterious visits from legendary coaches. Think Like a Warrior: The Five Inner Beliefs that Make You Unstoppable by Darrin Donelly will show us how to develop a “Warriors” mindset through adversity. Our third blog will discuss the advice received from Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Coach McNeely went through a period where he strongly considered resigning from his job because of the harsh criticism he was facing. He knew he should rise above the critics, but as Donelly points out, “when things are going bad, it can be so hard to stop stewing and focus on something constructive.” During this time period, he met Paul “Bear” Bryant, the famed college football coach. Coach Bryant bluntly called him out on his thinking, stating, “Good decisions are rarely made when we feel bad about ourselves. There’s going to be pressure with anything you do….your career, health, kids, marriage, neighbors, etc. – always going to be “something”….Since there will always be pressure and stress, the more reason to stick with something you love.”

As Coach McNeely mulled over Coach Bryant’s advice, he realized that mental toughness isn’t avoiding problems, it’s fighting through them, leading him to write down the following affirmation:

I know that problems will come my way, but I know that I have what it takes to overcome each and every one of them. No matter what obstacles I face today, I will fight my way through them. Nothing can stop me from reaching my chosen destination. I CHOOSE to persevere and never back down from the obstacles that stand between me and my dreams. Simply making this decision to never give up ASSURES me of success in whatever I set out to do. I will never, ever give up on my dreams. I am unstoppable

  • I am relentless and I will NEVER give up on my dreams”
